City Initiatives

The City is currently involved in a number of significant initiatives. Check this page often as it will be frequently updated to provide information about the progress we are making on each of them.

1. Active Trasportation Plan: The City of Duncan, Cowichan Tribes and the Municipality of North Cowichan are working together on an Active Transportation Plan that is designed to take back the streets from the automobile. Please take a few moments to fill out our Active Transportation Plan survey.

2. Official Community Plan Review webpage

3. Pool Referendum Information - Yes- 499 No- 133

4. The Downtown Revitalization Implementation Plan involves extending the design features of the new City Square along the rest of Craig Street. A draft concept plan was chosen in consultation with downtown businesses and City residents. Draft Concept Plan
The City is now getting a detailed design completed and obtaining updated cost estimates

5. In 2006, the City conducted a Boundary Restructure Study that explored the possibility of expanding its boundaries. The City worked with the BC Government’s Local Government Restructure Program to look at the potential advantages and disadvantages of including portions of the surrounding electoral areas within the City boundaries.

The City currently provides water and fire protection services to the majority of the study area.

A public committee was established and was made up of 5 Electoral Area Citizens, 3 Citizens from within the City, 1 representative from Cowichan Tribes and 1 Citizen from North Cowichan.

The City will explore ways to best address the recommendations of the Committee.

6. On an ongoing basis we work to support the initiatives of the Downtown Business Improvement Association, such as their thriving City Square Market and the ever-popular Christmas Light-up and Fireworks Display.

City Partnerships

The City is actively involved with numerous organizations that are also working to increase the health and safety of our community. These include:

Cowichan Valley Safer Futures - Safer Futures is a community development and research program that looks at issues of personal security for women, children and other marginalized groups in their communities, and works at the community level to develop and implement solutions.  http://www.saferfutures.org

Community Policing - The North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP, in partnership with the City of Duncan and the Municipality of North Cowichan, opened three community policing stations in the region in 2003 (Duncan, Cowichan Bay, Chemainus) http://www.warmlandcops.com
